1st Jewish Family in Toms River, N.J.


Samuel Kaufman born 1879 in Poland, ran away from the czars' army, came to NYC and worked on the docks as a stevedore earning 50 cents per day, married Rachel Dittmus, and saved enough money to open a bar in Brooklyn, NY, 5cent beer and free lunch, that Rachel made was a big hit so that eventually it became the biggest bar in the city. great prosperity followed. Samuel raced fine horses in prospect park, purchased a tenement house in which he, Rachel and his 5 daughters lived. one of the tennant families contracted TB and soon 2 of his daughters were also infected. he decided that it was necessary to find a place where his children would be safe. he took a train from NYC south in New Jersey as far as it went, which was freehold,n.j., but felt there were too many people, heard about smaller towns further south, hired a horse and wagon and traveled the whole day til he reached toms river,n.j.,which reminded him of the land near his home in Poland, his was the first Jewish family in toms river, he established the egg farming industry in toms river,sent the 1st chickens to Israel,donated the land for the Jewish community center, and the cemetery,and was the principal person who established the Jewish community in toms river.
